Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
