Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
