The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
